Institute Seminar: Grzegorz Pac: Rulers and the Canonisation of Saints in the Thirteenth Century

  • Det norske institutt i Roma 33 Viale Trenta Aprile Roma, Lazio, 00153 Italy (kart)

Grzegorz Pac, Associate Professor at the University of Warsaw, will explore the involvement of rulers in 13th-century papal canonisation processes, using the case of St. Stanislaus of Krakow as a focal point. Pac will also compare this with the case of St. Eystein of Trondheim, shedding light on the relationship between peripheral regions like medieval Poland and Norway with the papacy.

Grzegorz Pac is a prominent historian specialising in women’s history, queenship, and the cult of saints in the Early and High Middle Ages. His research focuses on the intersection of political and religious culture, particularly the legitimisation of elites in medieval Poland and Norway.

This seminar offers a fascinating discussion on the cultural and political dynamics surrounding saintly canonisations in medieval Europe.
