PhD Defence: Remoulding Cultures – Continuity and Change in the Italiote Cities of Roman Italy
Master Francesco Maniglia (Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History) will defend his dissertation, Remoulding Cultures: Issues of Continuity and Change in the Italiote Cities of Roman Italy, for the degree of philosophiae doctor (PhD).
The dissertation examines cultural transformations in the Italiote cities following the Roman conquest of southern Italy in the 3rd century BCE. By analyzing literary, epigraphic, and archaeological sources, Maniglia explores how these cities responded to shifts in governance, social structures, and institutional changes from the 3rd century BCE to the 2nd century CE. The study highlights strategies used by Italiotes to maintain their civic heritage while integrating into the Roman political framework, demonstrating how local institutions and religious practices became arenas for cultural negotiation and adaptation.
